Helgeland is the southern part of Nordland county in Norway between Trøndelag and the Arctic Circle right in the centre of Norway. The Helgeland coast is characterised by a wide belt of islands stretching some 50 km into the Atlantic and fjords that cut deep into the mainland. There are wide mountain areas partly protected as national parks.

In Senja and Lofoten, the high and steep mountains raise up from the ocean. At the beautiful Helgeland coast you will cross the Arctic Circle, in Trøndelag you will ride through agricultural landscapes and in Trondheim, you can visit the famous cathedral Nidarosdomen. Northern Norway covers about a third of Norway. The southernmost part, roughly the part south of the Arctic Circle, is called Helgeland.Here there is a multitude of islands and skerries on the outside of the coastal range, some flat, some with impressive shapes, like Mount Torghatten, which has a hole through it, and the Seven Sisters near Sandnessjøen.

The Helgeland coast, which also crosses the Arctic Circle, is often singled out as one of the most enjoyable parts of the Hurtigruten sailing route. Whether your voyage takes place during the endless summer days or in winter darkness with the Northern Lights, you will never forget your trip through this region, once home to Norway's famous 17th century poet-priest Petter Dass.

Hop on to experience the original main road between Bodø and Sandnessjøen. Visit adventure islands like Træna (pictured), and get to know the people who live out here, some six to seven miles from the mainland.

We also have many people contributing while sailing, so it is not tiring. But we do not control the weather, and you must be prepared for both windy and severe weather. Comprising thousands of islands in the south to steep mountains and narrow fjords in the north, Helgelandskysten (the Helgeland Coast) is possibly Norway’s most beautiful stretch of coast. Driving along Norwegian Scenic Route Helgelandskysten provides plenty of opportunities for hiking, cycling or boating adventures along the way. I visited Meløy in partnership with Northern Norway and Visit Helgeland. Okay, maybe you don’t actually need to forget Lofoten – in fact next up on my itinerary after Meløy would be the Lofoten islands. But, as you might know, Lofoten’s popularity has exploded in recent years, and it seems like the islands are getting more and more crowded with tourists each year.
